Admission Process and Procedures

For Traditional First-Year Students

The Admission Committee strongly recommends that students apply for admission early (by the end of the first semester of the senior year in high school) to receive full consideration for admission, scholarships and all other forms of financial aid. Carlow offers four different procedures for traditional freshman admission:

Regular Admission
Early Admission
Preferential Notification
Admission for Home Educated Students

Carlow has a rolling admissions policy. As soon as an application is reviewed and evaluated, students are notified of the admissions decision. For most scholarships, the admissions application serves as the University’s scholarship application as well; thus most scholarships are also awarded on a rolling basic, but subject to availability.

For Transfer Students

Prospective transfer students applying for admission should:

  • Submit a completed application form by either applying online for free, or submitting a formal application for admission, along with a non-refundable $20.00 application fee. Send either a check or money order made payable to Carlow University to the Admissions Office, Carlow University, 3333 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213;
  • Submit a final official high school transcript* to the Admissions Office indicating the student’s cumulative GPA, courses taken and grades received, class rank (if available), and SAT/ACT scores;
  • Submit an official transcript from each college and/or proprietary school attended—whether or not credit was earned—to the Admissions Office;
  • Submit a catalog or a copy of the course descriptions for all courses taken at an accredited institution outside of Allegheny County. Courses for which credit is desired should be indicated clearly. Sending course descriptions quickly will help expedite your transfer credit review;
  • Submit an essay or personal statement. This is optional but in some instances may be requested;
  • Arrange for a personal interview and campus visit. Although this is optional, it is strongly recommended, and in some instances, may be required. Admissions counselors are available to help with all steps of admissions and financial aid processes.
  • You will be assigned an Admissions Counselor to guide you through the transfer process.
  • An Advanced Standing Evaluation (ASE) of your credits and how they apply to your major and core requirements will be developed by our Advising Office and faculty in your intended major. Your ASE also serves as an education plan, showing which courses and how many credits remain for completion of your degree.

*The transcript is considered official if it contains the seal of the institution and is issued directly to Carlow University. Transcripts delivered to the Admissions Office by students are considered official only when sealed in an envelope with the institution’s seal over the flap. Faxed transcripts are not considered official. Official General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test scores may be accepted in lieu of high school transcripts.
