For Traditional First-Year Students
Carlow offers five methods for gaining credit for college level learning that has
taken place outside the classroom. Students may obtain credits by means of the
following:
A student may earn a maximum of 30 credits at Carlow,
or elsewhere, through these options, either singly or combined. Any credits
earned are not included in the number of credits necessary to satisfy college
residence requirements.
Advanced Placement Program of the College Board: The student who has taken
college level courses in one or more subjects in high school and has submitted
the results of the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Tests will be
considered for advanced placement. Test scores of 4 or 5 may entitle the student
to academic credit in course areas corresponding to the advanced study. Scores
are submitted to the Admissions Office, usually at the time of application for
admission. The Dean of Advising will consult with the appropriate academic
division to assign course equivalencies.

International Baccalaureate Program: Students who have completed the
International Baccalaureate Program and score five (5) or above on the
examinations may qualify for Carlow credits. In most cases, credits
awarded will be for elective credit only.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP): Eligibility: Scores must be presented to the Dean of Advising before the student completes 17 credits at Carlow or elsewhere. Award of CLEP credit is dependent on the successful completion of the equivalent of two full-time semesters (30 credits) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 after admission to Carlow. Credit cannot be awarded if the student has already taken the course. Credit is also not awarded for a course when the student has acceptable college credit for more advanced courses in the same area. Ordinarily, no examinations may be repeated in an attempt to receive credit.

General Information: Up to 30 semester hours of credit may be earned in the
basic liberal education courses by scoring 460 or above or, after July, 2001, scoring 50 or higher. Grades or grade points are not given; therefore, CLEP credit does not affect grade point average.
CLEP English: General Exam
• Only the English Composition w/Essay will be considered for credit.
CLEP English: Subject Exam
• American Literature: elective credit only
• Analysis and Interpretation of Literature: credit for EN 101
• English Literature: elective credit only
CLEP Humanities: General Exam
• Three elective credits.
CLEP Social Science/History, Natural Science or Mathematics: General
Exams
• Three elective credits
CLEP Subject Exams: Subject exams are evaluated by the division chair.
Credit in specific subject areas corresponding to Carlow courses may be
earned subject to division approval.
Course Challenge: Some courses may be challenged for either credit or
exemption by passing an examination and/or by satisfying another means
of evaluation. Each department has its own written policy statement
outlining which courses are eligible for challenge with credit versus
exemption and prescribing the conditions of the departmental challenge
process. Students may qualify for challenge if they have not already
attempted to pass or challenge the course or have not been enrolled in
the course for more than four weeks (For CAP and Weekend courses
consult the division office for appropriate time frame). To challenge the
course, students must submit to the appropriate academic division a
declaration of intention as well as reasonable evidence of preparation.
After a student has successfully challenged a course for credit, the course
is entered onto the transcript and the notation “Credit by Challenge” is
posted in lieu of a grade. Credits earned by challenge are charged at a
special fee. If a student chooses exemption, the exemption is noted by the
Office of the Registrar, and there is no fee.

Experiential Learning Portfolio Program: The Experiential Learning Portfolio
Program, under the direction of the Center for Academic Achievement, is
available to all matriculated students who have earned fewer than 30 credits at
Carlow. The program is intended to award academic credit to adults who have a
wealth of personal and professional experiences which correspond with Carlow’s
mission, goals and curriculum. In addition, in accordance with Carlow University’s
mission statement, the program encourages adults in their process of lifelong
learning and reflection. Only one portfolio may be submitted for academic credit;
portfolios compiled for credit at other institutions may not be submitted for
credit at Carlow. A student becomes eligible for portfolio assessment when the
application is completed and the application fee is paid. After applying for the
portfolio assessment, a student must turn in the completed portfolio before
earning 30 Carlow credits or within one year after the submitted portfolio
application, whichever comes first.
The completed portfolio is evaluated for its relevance to the goals and objectives
of the Carlow curriculum by faculty in the appropriate disciplines and is approved
by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Credits may be awarded as discipline
specific credits, course specific credits and general elective or competency credits.
A student may request a second review of the portfolio if there are questions
about its evaluation. However, a student may not submit new additional material
at this time. Competency credits may be used to fulfill core requirements only in
the cases of Women’s Studies and Peace and Justice. Otherwise, competency
credits are counted as electives. Notification of the credit award usually occurs
within one academic semester of portfolio submission.
Students’ portfolios are examined only by those representatives of the University
who have official reason to do so. Others may view the portfolio only with the
written consent of the student. Portfolios are kept on file for one year after
completion.

Technical Block: Students may be awarded credits for vocational/technical
programs of study. In the event that a student qualifies for a technical block
award, the credits can be used as elective credit only and may not be used as
equivalent course work in any of Carlow’s academic programs or in fulfillment of
any academic requirement. Course work taken in vocational and technical
programs of study is subject to the same transfer policies as arts and sciences
course work.
