Part I: College in High School Program Options
Carlow University offers high school students the opportunity to earn college credit through our College in High School (CHS) program.
The program offers four different credit-bearing options for students:
- Courses offered at high schools, and taught by high school personnel, which have been approved by Carlow as equivalent to Carlow courses or electives. This option would require the high school to allow a Carlow faculty and/or staff member to visit the class one time at the high school as a guest speaker, and/or schedule one visit to Carlow's campus for a guest lecture or experiential exercise.
- Courses co-taught in some manner by high school faculty and Carlow faculty, either at the high school or via a combination of teaching/experiential learning at the high school and at Carlow. Most often, this arrangement would take the form of having a Carlow faculty member teach or co-teach one to three lectures at the high school, and/or offer at least one lecture or experiential exercise, on Carlow's campus.
- Courses offered at high schools, and taught by Carlow faculty, at a content level approved as equivalent to the college level. This option is generally reserved for situations where a grant or other funding will provide Carlow faculty release time.
- Courses offered at Carlow which are open to high school students for credit (generally at the 100 or 200 level). In order to be approved to attend a class at Carlow University , high school students need to have a cumulative 3.0 GPA, following a college preparatory track.
Options 2 and 4 in bold above are preferred and more likely to be approved.
AP Courses and College in High School
Carlow's AP policy requires an AP exam score of 4 or 5 for Carlow credit to be granted. If students submit an AP exam score of 4 or 5 from a course that is also designated as a CHS course, s/he may only earn college credit ONCE for that course (either through the AP score or through successful completion of the CHS course).
Part II: College in High School Program Policies and Procedures
CHS Courses Taught at High Schools (Options 1, 2 and 3)
In general, we recommend the course approval process be completed by February 1 st so that high school students have plenty of time to plan the course into their schedule for the next academic year.
- The high school course syllabus must be evaluated by Carlow's academic program director, the appropriate associate dean, and the Provost, to determine whether or not the course material is equivalent to any Carlow courses or elective credit.
- If the course is taught or co-taught by high school personnel, the high school teacher's curriculum vitae must be submitted for evaluation by Carlow University . Upon meeting Carlow's qualifications as adjunct faculty, the high school teacher will teach the course at the high school site in coordination with the program director at Carlow.
- Students must meet the criteria established by their own schools to participate in the CHS program.
- CHS registration forms will be sent to the high school liaison as determined by the high school (usually the course teacher).
- The teacher will distribute registration forms to qualified students.
- Students are to return the completed registration forms, along with full payment, to the high school liaison. These completed forms and checks should be forwarded to the Carlow University CHS Coordinator by the deadline date indicated on the forms.
- Once registered for a Carlow CHS course, students will receive an official letter from Carlow University reiterating the grading and transcript policies. Students will also receive additional information on the University.
- CHS fees are dependent upon the number of credits for the course. A three-credit course is currently $100, and a four-credit course $150. These fees are subject to change.
- Course Withdrawal Policy:
- Drop class within two weeks of the course start date:
- Full refund and no record appears on the Carlow transcript
- Drop class beginning of third week through fifth week :
- Student receives ½ tuition refund
- Student pays $25.00 fee to Student Accounts
- No record appears on the Carlow transcript
- Drop class after the fifth week:
- No tuition refund
- Student pays $25.00 fee to Student Accounts
- No record appears on the Carlow transcript
- Credit will be granted towards high school graduation requirements in accordance with the graduation and grading policies of the high school.
- For any course taught by high school personnel, grade sheets will need to be returned to Carlow in order for the grade to be processed on a Carlow University transcript. The teacher determines the letter grade of the student, based on the requirements of the course as stated in the course syllabus. Any grade appeals are handled between the teacher and the student. Carlow University records the letter grades awarded by the teacher on the Carlow transcript.
- Students will be granted full college credit from Carlow University ONLY if a grade of an "A" or a "B" is earned .
- Transcript requests may be made by sending a letter of request or by completing a Transcript Request Form and submitting the appropriate transcript fee via a check made payable to Carlow University . Requests can be made to the following office:

- Should the student enroll at Carlow University upon high school graduation, any courses completed through Carlow's CHS program will be applied to Carlow's graduation requirements in accordance with the policies in place at the time of the student's matriculation. Should the student enroll at another college or university, the acceptance of transfer credits from Carlow's CHS program is determined by that college or university. Most colleges and universities generally accept CHS credits either as electives or general graduation requirements.
- Carlow University places an eight-credit limit on courses that can be taken via Carlow CHS arrangements taught or co-taught by high school faculty, and an eight-credit limit on CHS courses taken exclusively at Carlow.
- A "CHS Agreement" draft will be created by Carlow and shared with appropriate Carlow and high school personnel prior to signing the final agreement upon the request of either party.
- In exchange for offering high school students an opportunity for advanced coursework and to earn college credit at an exceptionally low tuition cost, a Carlow representative will arrange with the teacher, at least one visit either at the high school and/or on Carlow's campus, for students participating in the program.
- This agreement shall be in effect for the academic year indicated, and shall remain in effect until such time as either party requests, with proper notice, that it be reevaluated. Carlow University will review all courses approved for the CHS program on an annual basis, particularly in light of any curriculum or academic policy changes at the institution. Should any changes occur in the course syllabus or instructor(s), Carlow does require the course to be reevaluated. If changes in, or discontinuation of the program becomes necessary, changes must be planned one year in advance, and arrangements must be made to assure that any students with CHS courses in progress, will receive the full benefit of the program in place at the time they registered for the course(s).
- All inquiries, proposals and subsequent questions regarding Carlow University 's College in High School program should be routed through the Office of Admissions and the CHS program coordinator at 412-578-6059. Individual/academic course questions should be discussed between the teacher and primary Carlow academic contact indicated in this agreement.
