List of Scholarships

Merit-Based Institutional Scholarships and Awards: The scholarships and discounts below do not require a separate scholarship application, and are generally offered at the time of admission. Merit scholarships and discounts may be combined but cannot exceed direct cost. Student must maintain full-time enrollment at Carlow University to be eligible for scholarship or award.

SAT: Math and Verbal scored only. Excludes the Writing component of the exam. ACT: ACT scores will be converted to the SAT equivalent.

$3,000 Transfer Scholarship: A high-school GPA of at least 3.00 and an SAT score of 900 (or ACT equivalent), with 12 transferable college credits completed to date or 12 transferable credits in progress, and a college GPA of at least 3.00. Eligibility is limited to eight full-time semesterst. Student must maintain full-time enrollment at Carlow University to be eligible for Transfer Scholarship.

$3,500 Transfer Scholarship: A cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and a minimum of 24 transferable credits. Eligibility is limited to six full-time semesters. Student must maintain full-time enrollment at Carlow University to be eligible for Transfer Scholarship.

$5,000 Transfer Scholarship: A cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and a minimum of 24 transferable credits. Eligibility is limited to six full-time semesters. Student must maintain full-time enrollment at Carlow University to be eligible for Transfer Scholarship.

$5,000 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship: Available to transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and who enroll at Carlow University on a full-time basis. Eligibility is limited to eight full-time semesters.

$1,500 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship: Available to transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and who enroll at Carlow University on a part-time basis. Eligibility is limited to sixteen part-time semesters. Also available to students who enroll in CAP and Weekend College without the benefit of Corporate Partner tuition reduction.

Rose Marie Beard Woman of Spirit® Honors Scholarships: These $4,000 scholarships will be awarded each year to outstanding women who demonstrate high academic achievement and leadership, and whose personal and professional lives reflect the strong work ethic, indomitable spirit and compassionate leadership of Rose Marie Beard. Selection criteria include a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.6 or higher, a minimum SAT of 1100 (math and verbal scores only), and intended full-time enrollment as a freshman in the Day program. This is a non-renewable scholarship. In their junior year, however, Beard Scholars will have the opportunity to apply for a cash stipend to fund their participation in an approved Study Abroad Program for credit, or to underwrite the student’s Honors research project under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

IInstitute for the Academic Advancement of Youth: Carlow offers one scholarship to a non-matriculated middle school student participating in the One-Course Scholarship Program sponsored by the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth (IAAY) at the Johns Hopkins University. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for a three-credit course.

Athletic Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships are available in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The amounts of the scholarships vary. Students interested in further information should contact the Athletic Department by calling 412-578-8826 or E-mail Carlow Athletics at athletics@carlow.edu. Athletic scholarships may be combined with any academic scholarship.


Need-Based Awards, Grants and Endowed Scholarships

Please note that all endowed scholarships may be combined with merit-based academic and athletic scholarships.

Carlow Grant: Carlow provides grant funds to degree seeking students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. The amount of the grant varies according to financial need and academic profile and is determined after all other sources of financial aid have been awarded, including the maximum student loan according to the student’s grade level. A Carlow grant is not awarded to any student who receives a corporate discount. It is limited to 4 years of full-time study.

International Scholarships: Carlow provides need-based scholarships to students admitted through the International Student Center. Amounts vary depending on need and merit. For more information contact the Director of the International Student Center.

Eva Tansky Blum Woman of Spirit® Scholarship: Endowed by the PNC Financial Services Group, this scholarship will be awarded to a non-traditional aged female student who is enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student and who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to students who have had to overcome challenges and adversity in their lives.

Susan B. Bohn Woman of Spirit® Scholarship: Endowed by PNC Bank in honor of Susan B. Bohn, 1995 Woman of Spirit, this scholarship is designated for a junior or senior Business/Communication major who has demonstrated competency in her field, compassion for others, and the potential to be a future leader.

Tammi M. Brush ’98 Endowed Memorial Scholarship: Established by her husband, Roger T. Brush, Jr., this scholarship is awarded annually to a Carlow University student who is a Nursing major and who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to graduates of Norwin High School.

Mary Cassidy ’37 Memorial Scholarship: Bequeathed by her brother, Myles R. Cassidy, the Mary Cassidy ’37 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are in good academic standing and who demonstrate financial need.

Father Andrew Chih Scholarship: In memory of Father Andrew F. T. Chih, beloved Professor of History from 1963-1985. The Sisters of Mercy and Carlow University have made available a scholarship which will be awarded each year to one meritorious Carlow student who participates in a study abroad experience of at least one semester in length. See Study Abroad Programs on page 93.

Beverly Jean Childs ’91 Memorial Scholarship for Carlow Hill Education Center: Endowed through gifts from family and friends and through grants from the Ladies of Bethany, Post- Gazette Charities, and the Paul and Dina Block Foundation, this scholarship is awarded annually to a Carlow Hill Education Center student in memory of Beverly Childs, a graduate and administrator of the Carlow Hill Education Center.

Leonard and Mary D. Clark Memorial Scholarship: Established by Eleanor Clark Quigley ‘75, this need-based scholarship is awarded annually to a female, non-traditional, undergraduate student matriculated at Carlow University.

Hannah T. Clawson Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by former faculty member Shirley Clawson Arnold, the Hannah T. Clawson Endowed Scholarship provides extra financial support, above and beyond tuition, for academic and/or career preparation. The scholarship supports such needs as technology access, transportation, books, professional attire for internships or interviews, and other special needs to an academically deserving student with financial need in a graduate program.

Communication Department Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by an anonymous donor, this scholarship is designated for a full-time student with a declared major in Communication who has demonstrated academic excellence. Preference will be given to students with financial need.

Frances and Peter Dana Endowed Scholarship: Endowed through a bequest from Peter Dana, this scholarship is awarded to a student in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary Education on the basis of financial need and demonstrated academic success. Eligibility is limited to sophomore level students.

The Rose Marie DiNardo Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Environmental Studies: Established in honor of a former Carlow University staff member, through contributions made by family, friends, and colleagues of Rose Marie DiNardo and through grants from Mine Safety Appliances, Calgon Carbon Corp. and IKON Solutions, this scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a major in Environmental Studies. As the recipient of this scholarship, the student will pursue opportunities of advancing environmental work experiences with the Allegheny County Health Department and with Mine Safety Appliances.

Donnelly Family and National Endowment for the Humanities Scholarship: Endowed by grants made by the Donnelly Family and by the National Endowment for the Humanities, this need based scholarship will be awarded to full-time students who major in the Humanities and who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.

Duquesne Light Company Scholarship: Endowed by the Duquesne Light Company, this fund provides a partial tuition award. Residents of Allegheny and Beaver counties are eligible for consideration of this award.

Nancy Dunn ’55 Student Book Assistance Fund: Endowed through a bequest from her estate, the Nancy Dunn ’55 Student Book Assistance Fund will be awarded to students with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing a degree in the field of education.

Michele S. Fabrizi Woman of Spirit® Endowed Scholarship: Established by MARC USA in honor of Michele S. Fabrizi, this scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman or transfer student in the day program with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.25, who has a declared major in Business Management, Business/Communication, Business/Professional Writing, or Communication Studies, who demonstrates initiative, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and who is dynamic and has excellent communication skills.

Sister Marylouise Fennell Endowed Scholarship: This scholarship, in honor of Carlow University’s seventh president, is designated for full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence.

Mary Grace Brennan Fitzgerald ’58 Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by Robert M. Fitzgerald in memory of his wife, Mary Grace, this need-based scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is pursuing a major in the William A. Uricchio Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Preference is given to students from Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland.

The Margaret Fox Nursing Class of 1962 Commemorative Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by Margaret M. Fox, this scholarship is intended to help support a junior or senior Nursing major with the completion of her nursing studies at Carlow University. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.00.

Anne Peiffer Frazer Memorial Scholarship: Established through a bequest from alumna Anne Peiffer Frazer ´40, this endowed fund provides need-based partial tuition assistance to deserving students.

Ladies of Bethany Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Jacinta van Winkel, L.B.: Endowed by family, friends, and Ladies of Bethany in loving memory of Jacinta van Winkel, beloved and faith-filled theologian and longtime faculty member who ministered to women and youth, this scholarship will be awarded to a Carlow University student pursuing a major or minor in Theology. Scholarship recipients, who will be selected by the Theology Faculty at Carlow University in conjunction with the Financial Aid Officer, will have demonstrated financial need and academic potential and will exhibit determination and social awareness through their volunteer activities.

Crescent Eddy Fuhrer Memorial Scholarship in Graduate Nursing: Endowed by Frank Fuhrer in memory of his mother, Crescent Eddy Fuhrer, this need-based scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing at Carlow University.

Graduate Endowed Scholarship: Made possible through a grant from an anonymous donor, this scholarship is restricted to students pursuing graduate degrees.

Marva Harris Woman of Spirit® Endowed Scholarship: Established by PNC Bank in honor of Marva Harris, a Carlow University Woman of Spirit, this scholarship will be awarded annually to a Carlow Hill Education Center student.

Sister Rose Marie Hauber Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by the Carlow University Alumnae Association in honor of its beloved first moderator, Sister Rose Marie Hauber, this scholarship is awarded annually on a competitive basis to a full-time Humanities major beginning in the student’s junior year. Awarded for two years, the selection criteria include academic achievement and exemplifying the Carlow Mission. Preference is given to daughters of Carlow alumnae and those who have great financial need.

Sister Mary Joy Haywood Scholarship: Endowed by Leo M. Phillips, this scholarship is for a full time student with financial need majoring in one of the health care related majors or in Biology.

William Randolph Hearst Scholarship: Endowed by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, income from this fund is designated for partial-tuition awards to needy students enrolled in the Carlow Hill Education Center.

Sister Mary Paul Hickey Teachers Scholarship: Endowed by an anonymous donor, this scholarship is intended for a freshman student who is enrolled full-time, majoring in Education, and intending to become a teacher. The main criterion shall be financial need. Preference shall be given in the selection to students from the inner city with great financial need. The annual award is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains at least a 3.0 GPA and continues to make satisfactory progress toward a teaching career.

Mary A. and Frank J. Hren Memorial Scholarship: Established by Ray and Carol Hren Hoare ’62, this scholarship is designated for a Carlow Hill Education Center student with financial need.

Kathleen Wynne Hufnagel ’33 Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates need and academic excellence.

Jacob A. and Frieda M. Hunkele Charitable Fund: Awarded to Carlow Hill Education Center students, this scholarship is based on financial need.

Marie C. Jennings Memorial Woman of Spirit® Scholarship: Established by Marie C. Lowry, 1994 Woman of Spirit, this scholarship is designated for a graduate student in the School of Nursing in need of financial support.

May Kay Edwards Krauser ’59 Memorial Scholarship: Established by her husband Robert and her children Robert Edwards and Kathryn Edwards, this scholarship in memory of alumna, Mary Kay Edwards Krauser ’59, is designated for students in Business/Communication who are in financial need and in good academic standing and who demonstrate student leadership.

William and Marie Lowry Scholarship: Intended for Carlow Hill Education Center students making satisfactory progress toward a Bachelor’s degree, this gift was established by William M. Lowry.

Lt. Col. Charles R. Luke ’50 Scholarship: Mr. Luke was one of the veterans who returned from World War II and enrolled at Carlow (then Mount Mercy) under the GI Bill. His gratitude has been expressed in the creation of a scholarship for full-time adult students who have financial need and no other available aid.

Mary Ann McGinley ’50 Memorial Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by alumna, Rita McGinley ’40, the Mary Ann McGinley ’50 Memorial Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

McGillick Scholars Program: Funded by the F. E. McGillick Foundation, this program recognizes Catholic students enrolled at Carlow University who are under the age of 50 and who demonstrate need as determined by Federal Pell Grant and/or PA State Grant eligibility.

William Patrick McShea Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by family and friends of late distinguished Professor of History, Bill McShea, this scholarship is for a full-time undergraduate student with financial need enrolled in the Honors Program and majoring in the Humanities. Selection is to be made by the Director of the Honors Program from a list of eligible candidates supplied by the Financial Aid Office. The scholarship is not automatically renewable. If no student meets all of the criteria, the Vice President for Academic Affairs may select a student that most nearly qualifies.

McVay Natural Sciences/Biology Endowed Scholarship: Established through the generosity of Carlow University alumna, JoAnne Fox McVay, Ph.D., ’54, this endowed scholarship supports students in the natural sciences with partial tuition scholarships.

Marlene B. Noel ’85 Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by an anonymous donor, the scholarship is intended for a freshman student who is enrolled as a full-time student majoring in Nursing. Preference shall be given in the selection to needy students from Fayette County, Pa. The annual award is renewable for three years provided the recipient continues to make satisfactory progress toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and continues to demonstrate the potential to excel in the Nursing profession.

Parry Family Endowed Science Scholarship: Established through the generosity of Margery Brahmer Parry, graduate of the Class of 1945 in Home Economics, Charles W. Parry, former member of the Carlow University Board of Trustees, and their daughter, Anne Louise Parry, graduate of the Class of 1973 in Biology, this scholarship is designated for students who major in the Natural Sciences and who demonstrate financial need.

Paul Emmanuel Memorial Scholarship: Established by his wife, Clara Dubrawka Paul ’52, and his children, Emmanuel Matthew, Bernadette Katherine, Ph.D., and Gregory Emmanuel, this merit based scholarship is offered to a full-time undergraduate student, preferably in the Humanities, who is in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.50.

Schaner Family Endowed Scholarship: Established by Mary Kay Isler Schaner ‘60 and Dr. Paul J. Schaner, the Schaner Family Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to qualified sophomores who are majoring in Special Education with a 3.50 GPA and who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who are of German or Irish descent.

Margaret Scally Scott ‘50 Memorial Scholarship: Lovingly established by her husband, Maurice and children, Elizabeth Scott Lyons ’74, M. James Scott, Dr. Mary Margaret Scott, and Maura L. Scott, this merit-based scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is majoring in Mathematics and who has financial need. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing Secondary Education Certification.

Bernard and Marguerite Phillips Singer Endowed Sciences Scholarship: Endowed by Bernard Singer ´50 and Marguerite Phillips Singer ´45, this scholarship is awarded annually to a financially needy student majoring in the Natural Sciences and maintaining good academic performance. Preference is given to students from Canon McMillan Senior High School.

Sisters of Mercy Challenge Endowed Scholarship: Designated for full-time undergraduates with demonstrated financial need.

Sisters of Mercy Endowed Scholarship: Designated for full-time undergraduates with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence.

Mary Strauss-Noll ’57 Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by alumna, Resie Strauss-Noll ’57, this scholarship is designated for full-time undergraduate students in the Humanities, preferably English majors, with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence.

Ryan Swerbinski Family Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by Sister Basil Swerbinski, RSM, and family, this need-based scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is majoring in the Natural Sciences or Mathematics with preference given to students who are majoring in Mathematics with Certification in Secondary Education.

Mary Cook Tierney and James Michael Tierney Endowed Scholarship: Designated for a full-time student majoring in Art Education with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a strong determination to enter the field of Art Education. Preference is given to students of at least one quarter Irish descent.

Anne Cray Tito ’50 Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by her husband, Ralph R. Tito, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student majoring in Communication who has demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

The Margaret and Joseph Toomey Endowed Scholarship: Endowed by family and friends in memory of Margaret and Joseph Toomey, parents of alumnae, Joanne Toomey Riley ’63 and Margaret Toomey Urzua ’62, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student with demonstrated financial need.

USX Scholarship: Begun in 1993, this endowed scholarship provides funds for tuition, room and/or board to one full-time freshman annually. The scholarship is restricted to students with business-related majors or natural sciences majors. Sons or daughters of employees of USX Corporation or its units will be given preference.

Jane Beck Wells ´37 Student Assistance Fund: Endowed by Jane Beck Wells, this fund assists student(s) with financial need to receive support for academic and/or career preparation needs such as transportation, technology access, attire, etc., which are not covered by tuition. The fund is administered by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Women of Spirit ® Leadership Scholarship: Endowed by various donors, this scholarship is for new and returning full-time undergraduate students with financial need, academic excellence, documentation of community service through volunteerism, and documentation of leadership skills through participation in school or community organizations.

Bishop Donald W. Wuerl Endowed Scholarship: Designated for full-time Theology majors with financial need.

Discounts

Discounts may be combined with merit and athletic scholarships and Carlow Grant. In all cases, institutional aid can not exceed direct costs.

Family Member Discount | $2,000: This discount is awarded to each family member when more than one member of the same household is simultaneously enrolled at Carlow University as a full-time traditional student. It is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Catholic High School Discount | $2,000: This discount is awarded to full-time, first-time freshman enrolled in the traditional program who are graduates of Catholic High Schools. It is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Legacy Discount | $2,000: This discount is for children of alnumnae/i (completed a degree at Carlow University) who are enrolled full-time in the traditional program. It is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Courtesy Discount | $2,000: This discount is for the nieces, grand-nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, sisters, brothers, and parents of a living Sister of Mercy who are enrolled full-time in the Day Prorgam. It is limited to one family member per academic year and is limited to four years or eight semesters. (Also available to non-day students enrolled in a program that is not already discounted.)

Pennsylvania State Grant

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) offers grants to eligible, admitted undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor's degree. Students may apply for a PHEAA Grant by completing the FAFSA and all other forms required by PHEAA. Maximum award is $4,500. Students enrolled in the CAP format (8 weeks sessions) must enroll in BOTH sessions within a semester to qualify for PA State Grant.

Resources of Aid Outside the University

All students are expected to apply for federal and state financial aid, which includes grants, loans and work programs. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office and are mailed upon request. Carlow will not award institutional need-based grants or awards to students who do not apply for state and federal aid.

Grants

Federal Pell Grant Program: Funded by the federal government, the Pell Grant helps undergraduates pay for their first Bachelor’s degree. Students may apply for a Federal Pell Grant by completing the FAFSA form and submitting all other documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office. Awards range from $200 to $4,050.

PA State Grant: The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) offers grants to eligible, admitted undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor’s degree. Students may apply for a PHEAA Grant by completing the FAFSA and all other forms required by PHEAA. Maximum award is $3,300.

State Grant Programs: Students who are not Pennsylvania residents should contact the agency in their home state to see if they are eligible for assistance while attending a University in Pennsylvania.

Federal SEOG: The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is for undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Priority is given to Pell eligible students. Students may apply for FSEOG by completing the FAFSA and submitting all other documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Loans

Federal Perkins Loan: Perkins is a low-interest loan available to degree-seeking. Currently at 5 percent interest, the loan is repaid starting nine months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below half time. Eligible students must be admitted and enrolled at least half time. This loan program is administered by Carlow University in accordance with guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education. To apply for the Federal Perkins Loan, students must complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Nursing Loan: Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this program is intended to assist students achieve careers in nursing. Currently at 5 percent interest, this loan is awarded to nursing students enrolled at least halftime who demonstrate financial need. The loan is repaid starting nine months after the student graduates, leaves school, drops below half time, or changes from Nursing to another major. To apply for a Nursing Loan, students must complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Stafford Loan: Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students who are matriculated and enrolled at least half-time. Currently at a variable interest rate with a cap of 8.25%, the principle is repaid starting six months after the student graduates, withdraws, or drops below half-time status. Subsidized Stafford Loan borrowers are not charged any interest before repayment begins or during periods of deferment. Unsubsidized Stafford Loan borrowers are changed interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. The maximum a dependent freshman may borrow in an academic year is $2,625 while an independent freshman may borrow up to $6,625. A dependent sophomore may borrow up to $3,500 while an independent sophomore may borrow up to $7,500. Dependent juniors and seniors may borrow up to $5,500 while independent juniors and seniors may borrow up to $10,500. The maximum a graduate student may borrow in an academic year is $18,500. A student's loan eligibility cannot exceed the cost of education. Go here to complete a Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note, and Entrance Counseling, required for first-time borrowers.

Federal PLUS Loans: PLUS Loans are for parents who want to help pay for their dependent children’s education. The maximum a parent may borrow in an academic year is the difference between the student’s cost of education and financial aid. These loans have a variable interest rate with a cap of 9 percent and generally repayment begins within 60 days of the final loan disbursement. (Dependent students whose parents are denied the PLUS Loan due to adverse credit may borrow Stafford Loan at the independent student level.) To apply for the PLUS loan, click here.

Work

Federal College Work-Study Program: This program provides jobs for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students who need financial aid to help pay their educational expenses. Students are paid monthly, at least at the current federal minimum wage, and are encouraged to put their earnings toward their account balance. To apply for Work-Study, complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.
