Carlow Awards of $1,000 are available upon admissions review and are not shown within the above matrix.

Scholarships of $11,000 and up require a GPA of 3.0 at Carlow to be renewed each year. All other scholarships require satisfactory progress at Carlow to be renewed. All scholarships require full-time enrollment for continued eligibility.

Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth: Carlow offers one scholarship to a non-matriculated middle school student participating in the One-Course Scholarship Program sponsored by the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth (IAAY) at the Johns Hopkins University. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for a three-credit course.

Traditional Transfer Student Scholarships

$1,500 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Available to all transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and who enroll at Carlow University. May be combined with other scholarships.

Athletic Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships are available in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and cross-country. The amounts of the scholarships vary. Students interested in further information should contact the Athletic Department by calling 412-578-8826 or E-mail Carlow Athletics at athletics@carlow.edu. Athletic scholarships may be combined with any academic scholarship.


Need-Based Awards, Grants and Endowed Scholarships

Carlow Grant: Carlow provides grant funds to degree seeking traditional students who demonstrate financial need. The amount of the grant varies according to financial need and academic profile and is determined after all other sources of financial aid have been awarded, including the maximum student loan according to the student’s grade level. A Carlow grant is not awarded to any student who receives a corporate discount.

International Scholarships: Carlow provides need-based scholarships to students admitted through the International Student Center. Amounts vary depending on need and merit. For more information contact the Center for Global Learning.

Discounts

Discounts may be combined with merit and athletic scholarships and Carlow Grant. In all cases, institutional aid can not exceed direct costs.

Family Member Discount | $2,000
This discount is awarded to each family member when more than one member of the same household is simultaneously enrolled at Carlow University as a full-time traditional student.  It is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Legacy Discount | $2,000
This discount is for children of alumnae (completed a degree at Carlow University) who are enrolled as full-time traditional students.  It is limited to four years or eight semesters. 

Courtesy Discount | $2,000
This discount is for the nieces, grand-nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, sisters and brothers of a living Sister of Mercy who are enrolled as full-time traditional students.  It is limited to one family member per academic year and is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Out-of-State Discount | $2,000
This discount is awarded to traditional full-time students residing out-of-state. It is limited to four years or eight semesters.

Pennsylvania State Grant

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) offers grants to eligible, admitted undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor’s degree. Students may apply for a PHEAA Grant by completing the FAFSA and all other forms required by PHEAA. To qualify for the State Grant, students cannot enroll in a single CAP session only (8 weeks). Registered classes must be a combination from both CAP sessions or have other DAY or WEC classes along with the CAP class. State Grant recipients have to also pass the 50% classroom instruction rule meaning at least half of the courses registered within a semester are in a classroom setting (not online). Academic progress is checked at the end of each academic year. In an academic year, students receiving two full-time award of state grant must earn at least 24 credits and students receiving two part-time award of state grant must earn at least 12 credits. Students who have not maintained satisfactory academic progress may enroll in summer courses (without state grant aid) to make up the necessary credits. A student is eligible for a total of 8 full-time or 16 half-time awards. GPA does not play any part in assessing academic progress for State Grant.

Resources of Aid Outside the University

All students are expected to apply for federal and state financial aid, which includes grants, loans and work programs. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office and are mailed upon request. Carlow will not award institutional need-based grants or awards to students who do not apply for state and federal aid.

Grants

Federal Pell Grant Program: Funded by the federal government, the Pell Grant helps needy undergraduates pay for their first Bachelor’s degree. Students may apply for a Federal Pell Grant by completing the FAFSA form and submitting all other documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office. For the 2010-11 academic year, the awards range from $555 to $5,550.

PA State Grant: The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) offers grants to eligible, admitted undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor’s degree. Students may apply for a PHEAA Grant by completing the FAFSA and all other forms required by PHEAA. For the 2010-11 academic year, the maximum award is $3,541.

State Grant Programs: Students who are not Pennsylvania residents should contact the agency in their home state to see if they are eligible for assistance while attending a University in Pennsylvania.

Federal SEOG: The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is for undergraduates seeking their first Bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Priority is given to Pell eligible students. Students may apply for FSEOG by completing the FAFSA and submitting all other documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Loans

Federal Perkins Loan: Perkins is a low-interest loan available to degree-seeking. Currently at 5 percent interest, the loan is repaid starting nine months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below half time. Eligible students must be admitted and enrolled at least half time. This loan program is administered by Carlow University in accordance with guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education. To apply for the Federal Perkins Loan, students must complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Nursing Loan: Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this program is intended to assist students achieve careers in nursing. Currently at 5 percent interest, this loan is awarded to nursing students enrolled at least halftime who demonstrate financial need. The loan is repaid starting nine months after the student graduates, leaves school, drops below half time, or changes from Nursing to another major. To apply for a Nursing Loan, students must complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Direct Student Loan: Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students who are matriculated and enrolled at least half-time. The loan principle is repaid starting six months after the student graduates, withdraws, or drops below half-time status. Subsidized loans are not charged any interest before repayment begins or during periods of deferment. Unsubsidized loans are charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. The maximum a dependent freshman may borrow in an academic year is $5,500 while an independent freshman may borrow up to $9,500. A dependent sophomore may borrow up to $6,500 while an independent sophomore may borrow up to $10,500. Dependent juniors and seniors may borrow up to $7,500 while independent juniors and seniors may borrow up to $12,500. The maximum a graduate student may borrow in an academic year is $20,500. A student's loan eligibility cannot exceed the cost of education. Go to: www.studentloans.gov to complete a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note, and Entrance Counseling, required for first-time borrowers.

Federal Direct PLUS Loans: PLUS Loans are for parents who want to help pay for their dependent children’s education and graduate students who want to receive additional loan on top of the Federal Direct Student Loan. Maximum eligibility in an academic year is limited to the difference between the student’s cost of education and other financial aid. Repayment begins within 60 days of the final loan disbursement. (Dependent students whose parents are denied the PLUS Loan due to adverse credit may borrow Federal Direct Loan at the independent student level.) Work

Federal College Work-Study Program: This program provides jobs for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students who need financial aid to help pay their educational expenses. Students are paid monthly, at least at the current federal minimum wage, and are encouraged to put their earnings toward their account balance. To apply for Work-Study, complete the FAFSA and submit any documents that may be requested by the Financial Aid Office.
